Advectively dominated flows in the cores of giant elliptical galaxies : application to M 60 ( NGC 4649 )

چکیده
It has been suggested that the final stages of accretion in present–day giant elliptical galaxies occur in an advection-dominated mode. The poor radiative efficiency of this accretion solution accounts for the fact that massive black holes, which are believed to reside in the centres of these galaxies, do not have the luminosities expected if accretion from the hot interstellar medium occurs at the Bondi rate. We discuss the advection-dominated solution for the nucleus of M60 (NGC 4649) and show that accretion at the Bondi rate is consistent with the core flux from radio to X-ray. This solution allows for a black hole mass of ∼ 10 9 M ⊙ as required by independent arguments. The successful application of this model to both M60, and previously to the well known nucleus of M87, suggests that accretion of hot gas in an elliptical galaxy creates the ideal circumstances for advection-dominated accretion flows to operate.

Strong observational constraints on Advection-Dominated Accretion in the cores of elliptical galaxies
The growing evidence for supermassive black holes in the centres of relatively nearby galaxies has brought into sharper focus the question of why elliptical galaxies, rich in hot gas, do not possess quasar–like luminosities. Recent studies suggest that the presence of advection–dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) with their associated low radiative efficiency, might provide a very promising expla...
متن کاملHard, power-law X-ray emission from elliptical galaxies
We report the detection of hard, power-law emission components in the X-ray spectra of six nearby, giant elliptical galaxies observed with the ASCA satellite. The systems studied, which exhibit strong dynamical evidence for supermassive black holes in their nuclei, are M87, NGC 1399 and NGC 4696 (the dominant galaxies of the Virgo, Fornax and Centaurus clusters, respectively) and NGC 4472, 4636...

متن کاملXMM - Newton Observation of Diffuse Gas and LMXBs in the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4649 ( M 60 )
We present an XMM-Newton X-ray observation of the X-ray bright E2 elliptical galaxy NGC 4649. In addition to bright diffuse emission, we resolve 158 discrete sources, ∼50 of which are likely to be low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with NGC 4649. We find evidence for variability in three sources between this observation and a previous Chandra observation. Additionally, we detect five so...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in Elliptical Galaxies: Distribution and Kinematics
I present interferometric images (∼7 resolution) of CO emission in five elliptical galaxies and nondetections in two others. These data double the number of elliptical galaxies whose CO emission has been fully mapped. The sample galaxies have 10 to 5×10 M⊙ of molecular gas distributed in mostly symmetric rotating disks with diameters of 2 to 12 kpc. Four out of the five molecular disks show rem...
